Ceremonial Raw Cacao

Raw cacao for rituals, ceremonies, or simply for your enjoyment

What is ceremonial raw cacao?

Ceremonial raw cacao (also called ritual cacao) is used in cacao ceremonies. This is an ancient, shamanic ritual that has its origins in Central and South America.

According to a Mayan myth, the plant goddess Ixcacao (we call her Mama Kakawa) goes out into the world, to us humans, when we have lost our connection to our (inner) nature.

She bestows warmth and security upon our wounded, closed hearts and reminds us who we truly are. She helps us to let love flow again in our hearts.

Even in the Mayan and Aztec cultures, cacao was considered a sacred plant. They called it "Theobroma," which translated from Greek means "food of the gods." Cacao was not simply drunk – it was celebrated. As a ritual drink, as an offering, as medicine.

This deep spiritual connection to the plant is still palpable today – especially when we consume cacao in its purest form: as ceremonial raw cacao

What's your cocoa variety?

Our cocoa is...

  • Organic & Fair Trade
  • from natural cocoa beans
  • packed in zero waste packaging (compostable)
  • without additives

How to prepare ceremonial cacao:

  1. Heat 200ml of water or plant-based milk, just enough for it to reach
the right drinking temperature for you and for the cocoa to dissolve easily
    (Do not exceed 60-70 °C).
  2. Add spices such as cinnamon, vanilla, chili, cardamom, or cloves, depending on your taste and preference. A pinch of good salt should always be on hand. Or you can use our own blend, Kakao-Glitzer.
  3. Add 20g - 35g of finely crushed raw cacao to your mixture and let it melt.
  4. Stir with a wooden spoon and check if you need any sweetness. Perhaps you'd like to sweeten it with some date syrup, coconut blossom sugar, or honey?

Let your intuition guide you and treat yourself to a moment to enjoy your cacao in peace.

How much cacao do you need for 1 cup?
We like to start the morning with about 25g, and for a ceremony, with about 30-40g per person.

Questions about cocoa

Ceremonial cacao is fundamentally different from the ordinary cocoa powder known in our latitudes.

At Ritualmanufaktur, we source our cacao from small-scale
partners who grow it in sustainable mixed cultures and process it traditionally.

Thanks to the particularly gentle roasting process, valuable vitamins and minerals are preserved – unlike industrially processed cocoa, which is often roasted at much higher temperatures. This way, ceremonial cacao retains its
original strength and effectiveness.

With its naturally high content
of theobromine – a gently stimulating, caffeine-like substance – it can both awaken and clarify the mind, and open the heart. A powerful plant medicine gift that supports you mindfully.

For Ritualmanufaktur, not only the quality of the cacao is central, but also the connection to its origin. Every cup allows you to feel what the Maya and Aztecs have honored for millennia:
cacao as a sacred plant, as a companion in rituals, and as the true "food of the gods."

  1. Heat 2dl of water or plant-based milk, just enough so that it has the
right drinking temperature for you and the cocoa dissolves easily. (Not above 60-70 °C).
  2. Add spices such as cinnamon, vanilla, chili, cardamom
or cloves, depending on your taste and preference. A pinch of good salt should always be at hand.
  3. Add 20g - 35g of finely crushed raw cocoa to your mixture and let it melt.
  4. Stir with a wooden spoon and check if you need any sweetness. Perhaps you'd like to sweeten it with some date syrup, coconut blossom sugar or honey?

Let your intuition guide you and treat yourself to a moment to enjoy your cocoa in peace.

Essentially, all three terms mean the same thing: raw cacao.

However, when this raw cacao is consciously used in a ceremony or ritual, it is referred to as ceremonial cacao, ceremonial raw cacao, or ritual cacao. The terms thus emphasize less a different product, but rather the context and the type of use: mindful, intentional, and ritualistic.

What surprises many is that cocoa's heart-opening effect is not just a poetic image – it also has a
physiological basis.

Raw cocoa contains:

  • Theobromine – a gentle stimulant that stimulates the
cardiovascular system without causing the agitation associated with caffeine.
Many report a feeling of clarity and spaciousness in the chest area.
  • Phenylethylamine (PEA) – also known as the "love molecule." It is also released by the body when in love and can promote feelings of happiness.
  • Anandamide – a neurotransmitter derived from the Sanskrit word
    "Ananda," meaning bliss. It supports
    emotional balance.
  • Magnesium – the "mineral of calm." It relaxes muscles, the nervous system – and the heart.

This combination acts like a gentle, warm hug from within.

Absolutely - YES! We have many customers who have completely replaced their morning coffee
with cocoa and enthusiastically advocate for the positive changes
they have experienced as a result.

Melted cocoa will not lose quality, but it will lose its appealing appearance.

At outdoor temperatures of 25 °C and above, there is unfortunately a risk that this will happen, especially in warm weather.

If you then store the cocoa in a cool place again, you can continue to enjoy it without concern.

We regularly host cacao ceremonies and workshops at our premises, the Ritualmanufaktur.
