Camphor is a traditional natural substance that has been used for centuries in rituals, smudging practices, and folklore. It is extracted from the wood of the camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora) and is known for its clear, intensely fresh scent.

Origin & History

Camphor originally comes from East Asia and was traded as a valuable substance in ancient times. In many cultures, it was considered protective, cleansing, and harmonizing – both on a material and energetic level. It was particularly used in transition rituals and for space clearing.

Scent & Effect when Smudging

When smudged, camphor emits a penetrating, cool-clear scent. It is said to dissolve heavy or stagnant atmospheres and noticeably open up spaces. Camphor is traditionally used to:

  • energetically cleanse
  • promote clarity and alertness
  • support protection and boundaries

Due to its intensity, camphor is one of the strongly effective smudging substances and is usually used alone or very sparingly.

Careful Handling

Camphor should always be smudged consciously and in moderation. Good ventilation is important. It is not suitable for continuous use and should not be used in the presence of children, pregnant women, or pets.
