Appearance: forms rectangular, often doubly terminated crystals with four-faced tips (pyramidal habit) or square end faces (cubic habit), often grown together into groups or lamellar aggregates.

Localities: Australia (rare), Brazil, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, USA. The main supplier country for both clear crystals and the rare green clusters is India (Poona).

Etymology: Apophyllite means “to flake off” (Greek apo = off and phyllon = leaf) and refers to the mineral's property of flaking into individual lamellae when exposed to a hot flame. The name was given to the mineral by René-Just Hauy in the 18th century. Synonyms include Fish-eye stone, Ichthyophthalm.
